The Rjukan wall
The outside wall of our Skien/Telemark booth was facing one of the entrances to Reykjavik Hall, a very attractive position for any exhibitor. We made this a "Rjukan wall" where we displayed brochures and information about Rjukan and the Heavy Water Sabotage of WWII. A documentary film about the sabotage attracted a lot of people.
Corporal Harold K. Hanson of the 99th Infantry Battallion (Separate)'s A Company joined us and helped us manning this part of the booth. Corporal Hanson was dressed in his 99th Infantry uniform ! The 99th was on ski training and mountain climbing training in Colorado in 1942/1943, and they had a high priority in President Franklin D. Roosevelt's then Top Secret Plans to have Special Forces do sabotage behind the lines in Norway. President Roosevelt even came to see them training !
In Oslo, Norway on June 7th 1945, the 99th was Honor Guard to His Highness King Haakon the VII of Norway for his triumphant return after five years. The 99th did not return to the United States until Nov 1945 after having spent four and a half months in Norway assisting in the round up of the Nazi troops.
Corporal Harold K. Hanson received a signed certificate from Crown Prince Olav, later King Olav V of Norway, for helping to free Norge.
Harold passed away on May 8, 2010. See this link.
