The main road between Oslo and Stavanger went through the hole in the mountain in the background. The road was built in the 30'ies to give work to unemployed.

Unloading cars in Stavanger

Unloading cars from the car-ferry from Haugesund.

Tonsåsen

The old main road from Stavanger to Krisitansand and Oslo. This hill was one of the most challenging parts of the road, and it was later used in the car rally Rally Monte Carlo for all cars starting the rally 'in Stavanger.

There is no railroad crossing the bay, so the picture is taken before the railroad between Oslo and Stavanger was completed.

Suldalsosen

From Suldalsosen in Ryfylke in Rogaland. Here is where the lake ends and the river starts. The river used to be a very good river for salmon fishing, and many wealthy Englishmen came here every year for fishing.

Hurtigruten in Stavanger

Hurtigruten, today sailing between Bergen and Kirkenes, was earlier also sailing between Stavanger and Kirkenes. In the picture you see one of the earlier Hurtigrute-ships M/V Sandnes at Stavanger harbour. Picture from 1958 or 1959. In 2009 discussions go if Hurtigruten shall start and end in Stavanger instead of Bergen.

Dampen - the Steamer

The small steamship S/S Suldal on Suldalsvatnet (Lake Suldal). The ship could carry 2 cars on the front deck. The ship is still sailing in the tourist season.

Vika in Suldal

A house you always noticed when passing on the main road through Suldal in Ryfylke. The owner Olav Vinje outside his house.

Egerøybroen

Egerøybroen, the bridge between Egerøy outside Egersund and the mainland was opened in 1951. The Norwegian crown prince, later King Olav, was present.

Suldal church

Many emigrants left Suldal to homestead in the United States. In Juneau County in Wisconsin there is a place called Suldal. If you search for "Suldal WI" you find a lot of information, like here.
