Farsund
Farsund bridge in southern Norway. Farsund and the area of Farsund sent a huge number of emigrants to the United States. Some small communities in the area are more american than norwegian because quite a lot of people commute between the Farsund area and the New York area. Picture from 1937.
To refer a bit of what is written about the emigration from the Farsund, Lista and Kvinesdal area:
As most people know, lots of people from Lista and the Lister region emigrated to America, especially after World War 2 and until the mid-sixties. Many returned, bringing with them examples of American culture: language, food recipes, furniture, cars, music, art, good and bad habits, building materials for American-inspired houses and equipment for home furnishings. Cultural historian Siv Ringdal has published two books on the subject, “The American Lista” and “Lapskaus Boulevard”. In Kvinesdal they have opened an emigrant museum and people work together to develop a greater understanding of the background for emigration, what it has meant and how it has influenced the development of the “Lister culture”.
