Hammerfest

Hammerfest as seen from the Salen mountain. Salen is the town's mountain, "Byfjellet". The quay for "Hurtigruten", the ships that sail between Bergen and Kirkenes, has the same location today as in 1916 when this picture was taken. The island in the background is Melkøya, known for its LNG plant owned by Statoil-Hydro. The headland between the town center and Melkøya is Fugleneset, also known for oil activities. (Information about Hammerfest is received from Hans Kr. Amundsen, editor-in-chief of Nordlys).
